Earth Spirit Magazine was founded in 2023 by Jasmine Metta Truman. It is an annual magazine displaying work by group of creatives, in response to their relationship with the environment around them. The magazine celebrates and explores our ancient connection to the natural world.
In a ploy to eat outside more this summer, I have been developing the concept of humble “tinned fish fire”. This is where you use a tin of oily fish and a piece of tissue as a camping stove instead of a traditional jet boil or Trangia, whiles also heating up and smoking the fish inside the tin, developing a more complex flavour. This method is portable, simple, adaptable and reduces waste.
A by-product of the fish fire is a concentrated, black soot, produced by the flame, that coats the bottom of your pan. It is a thick power that gets everywhere and is a pain to clean up. So, out of curiosity and resourcefulness, I have spent the last few weeks working out to use this soot to make a pigment or paint. Mixed with linseed oil, or the left over fish oil (if you don’t mind your painting having a slight fishy smell) the soot creates a luxurious, deep black. It is incredibly dark when not diluted but has the properties to produce different shades if you add various amounts of oil. I especially liked using the soot without any oil as it created feathery, charcoal-like texture that does not smudge.
