Mabel’s practice is a testament to her surroundings and lived experiences. She is deeply interested noticing small happenings, preserving and prolonging these fleeting moments and celebrating the often overlooked.
Working in a variety of mediums, she is drawn to landscapes and the wilderness, allotments and vegetable garden scenes, still lives and the intimacy of a home. There is a deep connection to the seasons in her work and she adapts her practice accordingly. Craft and care is also at the forefront of her practice, with a keen eye for detail, she pours time in to every step.
Often stemming from drawings, Mabel like to combine compositions into whimsical, lyrical stories on canvas, paying attention to tone, pattern and the rhythm of the brushstrokes. Using thick, jammy paint, she carves out images using negative space and bold colours. Abstraction varies from piece to piece. She uses sculpture to add a playful dimension to her work and create atmosphere.
What is formed is a storybook of images representing her lived experiences, a patchwork quilt of her imagination and an invitation into her world.
